We Sell the Diagnosis, Not the Door

Ayearofkilling works on garage doors across Huntington Beach, out of Main St in the 92649 ZIP. What we do differently is boring and it matters: we finish the whole inspection before we say a word about price.

Most companies in this trade make their margin on doors. We make ours on hardware and labour, which means when a door can be saved we have no reason to pretend otherwise. That is the entire business model, and it is worth stating out loud because the alternative is so common.

The Sequence Never Changes

Balance test by hand first, because it explains most complaints on its own. Then springs, for gaps and for wire size. Then the bottom few inches of each cable. Then track, roller stems and bearings. Then the bottom section and every hinge point. Then the opener, force and reversal tested separately.

Six tests, same order, every visit. Running them out of order is how technicians talk themselves into a conclusion before the evidence is in. If we start at the opener we will find something wrong with the opener, because there is always something.

What We Will Tell You

The finding, test by test, including the ones that came back clean. Sound sections and worn hardware is a repair, effectively regardless of the year the door was built, because hardware is the inexpensive half of a garage door and always has been.

A bottom section that has rusted through at the seam, a wood door delaminating along its bottom rail, or one piece tilt up geometry with jamb hardware nobody manufactures any more: those are genuine replacements and we will show you the reason on the door itself.

Two Things We Refuse to Say

The first is that your door is old. It is not a diagnosis, it is a way of avoiding one, and it is usually deployed when nobody has done the balance test.

The second is that a broken spring means you need a new door. A spring is a consumable rated in cycles. It says nothing about the sections above it. When a spring call arrives on your driveway as a door sale, ask which test produced that conclusion, and watch what happens.

Near the water we do adjust the timeline rather than the standard. Salt gets into cable strands and into the inside face of a bottom section, so in Huntington Harbour we press seams and pull rollers that we might only sight further inland.
